Did you know that there is a website you MUST check out before buying any home!?
Out of the many buyer’s we have helped over the years very few ever took my advice to check the Megan’s Law website to check the neighborhood. When you’re narrowing down a neighborhood in your house hunt make sure to check all the locations on the Megan’s Law website http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov.
The fist time I looked up my neighborhood on the Megan’s Law website I was shocked! The website is inspired by Megan Kanka a 7 year old in New Jersey who was raped and murdered by a known molester who lived across the street from her. This CA website along with the parent site shows where all the known sexual offenders in the nation currently reside. All sex offenders must register under this law and on the website where you may view their photos, and other information such as their exact crime.
This website is not for the faint of heart. If you are like me you will be unprepared for how many sex offenders live in your neighborhood or even on your block. Just being aware of someone who may be a threat may help you avoid a few of the monsters out there. If you discover you have a sex offender living near you alert your children to the danger in an appropriate way for their age. As an adult, keep an eye on your neighbor, don’t be alone with them and watch them if they are near children.
My intention with this article is not to frighten anyone but to prepare families for this very real threat. In this day and age, it pays to know who your neighbors are.
